Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is facing a potential spell on the sidelines after manager Ruben Amorim revealed the Portuguese midfielder may have suffered a 'soft tissue' injury during Sunday's defeat at Aston Villa.
Fernandes was withdrawn at half-time of the 2-1 loss at Villa Park after appearing to tweak his hamstring during the first half. The injury adds to United's mounting injury concerns ahead of a busy festive period.
Amorim's update on Fernandes
Speaking after the match, Ruben Amorim confirmed that Fernandes had experienced discomfort and was removed as a precaution.
"Bruno felt something and we didn't want to take any risks," Amorim said. "It looks like it could be a soft tissue injury but we will know more in the coming days after he has been assessed by the medical team."
United's injury crisis deepens
The potential loss of Fernandes comes at the worst possible time for Manchester United. The Red Devils were already without seven first-team players for the trip to Villa Park.
Natural replacement Kobbie Mainoo was also unavailable after picking up a calf complaint on the eve of the game, leaving Amorim with limited options in midfield.
The defeat at Villa Park was United's second loss in 11 matches under Amorim, but the injury to their captain could have significant implications for the festive fixture schedule.
What's next for United?
Manchester United face Newcastle United at Old Trafford on Boxing Day before hosting Wolves on December 30. The club will be hoping Fernandes' injury is not as serious as initially feared.
The 30-year-old has been a key figure for United since joining from Sporting CP in January 2020 and any extended absence would be a significant blow to their season.
Further updates expected following medical assessment.
