Everton have received a definitive response from Manchester United regarding their interest in Kobbie Mainoo ahead of the January transfer window.

Sources confirm the Toffees made contact with the England international's representatives last month as David Moyes targets midfield reinforcements for the second half of the season.

Understanding is that United have opened the door to a potential loan move, with head coach Ruben Amorim publicly stating his willingness to discuss the situation with the 20-year-old.

Amorim's Position Clear

Speaking ahead of United's game against Bournemouth, the Portuguese coach was direct: "If Kobbie comes to me and talks to me, I will talk to him. I just want my players happy and I understand that every individual has their goals."

Mainoo has yet to start a Premier League match this season, making just 10 substitute appearances. His only start came in the Carabao Cup exit against Grimsby.

Competition For Signature

Everton face significant competition. Sources indicate West Ham are also open to a loan deal, while Napoli remain interested in a permanent transfer. Italian reports suggest talks with the Serie A leaders have accelerated.

However, United sources suggest the club would prefer to send Mainoo abroad if a temporary exit is sanctioned, rather than strengthening a Premier League rival.

Why Mainoo Fits Everton's Needs

The Toffees lack a progressive ball-carrier in midfield. While Idrissa Gueye provides defensive steel and James Garner offers control from deep, Mainoo's ability to receive in tight spaces and drive through the lines would add a different dimension.

With Gueye set to depart for the Africa Cup of Nations and Garner often required to cover at right-back, Everton's midfield depth is stretched.

World Cup Factor

For Mainoo, the 2026 World Cup looms large. The midfielder knows he cannot afford to spend another six months on the Old Trafford bench if he wants to force his way into Thomas Tuchel's England squad.

Club legends including Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand, and Nicky Butt have all publicly advised the academy product to seek regular football elsewhere.

The January window opens in two weeks. Expect movement.
