Manchester United sources have dismissed claims that Kobbie Mainoo's move to Napoli is virtually complete. Italian reports suggesting the deal was 99% done have been labelled premature, with sources insisting no agreement is close despite ongoing contact between the clubs.
Italian claims spark United response
The story originated from journalist Luca Cerchione, who claimed on Fischio Finale TV that a source close to Napoli assistant coach Cristian Stellini had confirmed a significant acceleration in negotiations. The suggestion that a deal was almost sealed forced United into a rare public response.
Sources close to the club have told TeamTalk that while Napoli have made contact over Mainoo, discussions remain at an early stage. The 99% figure bears no relation to reality. Understanding is that United view the Italian reports as an attempt by Napoli to establish pole position ahead of January's window.
Mainoo frozen out under Amorim
The midfielder's situation at Old Trafford has deteriorated rapidly since Ruben Amorim's arrival. Mainoo has not started a Premier League game since August, appearing only as a substitute in his 10 league outings this season. The England international who starred at Euro 2024 now faces missing the 2026 World Cup altogether unless his circumstances change.
Paul Scholes described the situation as mind-boggling. The United legend said watching academy graduates being pushed out was difficult to comprehend, adding that he could not in good conscience tell Mainoo to stay if a better opportunity arose.
Napoli see McTominay blueprint
Napoli's interest is genuine. Antonio Conte's side have been hit by midfield injuries to Billy Gilmour, Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Kevin de Bruyne. They view Mainoo as an emergency solution who could replicate Scott McTominay's successful transition to Serie A.
Sources indicate more than 10 clubs are monitoring the 20-year-old's situation. Tottenham, Newcastle and Manchester City have all registered interest in a player valued at around £35 million. Amorim will only sanction an exit if a replacement is secured first, with Conor Gallagher and Joao Gomes among the names under consideration.
For now, United are holding firm. But the noise around Mainoo grows louder by the day.
